Re: No misdirected 'vacation' messages

2004-02-05 08:51:08

- Users want both their and other people's absence/vacation messages
to go to the right place (e.g. original sender of a mail rather than
   a whole mailing list).

This isn't a flaw in the mail protocol; it's a flaw in either (or both) the
mailing list manager and the autoresponder involved. autoresponders should
(today) be replying only to the envelope sender address, and not responding to
messages from mailing lists (which are clearly identified by various headers,
including Mailing-List: and heuristics like Precedence:).

In short, it's a solved problem.

But not standardized. There are no RFC's that state this is the way
autoresponders
or mailing lists should behave.
