This isn't a flaw in the mail protocol; it's a flaw in either (or both) the
mailing list manager and the autoresponder involved.  autoresponders should
(today) be replying only to the envelope sender address, and not responding to
messages from mailing lists (which are clearly identified by various headers,
including Mailing-List: and heuristics like Precedence:).

In short, it's a solved problem.

No, it's a problem with a solution. There's a difference.

People want it to always work. It doesn't now. Hence, it's a 'user requirement'
