Success.
I tried to compile perl5.6.1 and it would not past the test.
I tried to compile perl5.8.0 and it would not past the test.
I downloaded perl.5.00503 and compiled it. mharc then installed cleanly.
On to implementation.
Thanks for you help. It provided a good guide to resolving the problem.
