I've been using something similar, but it's ugly.

If you are refering to a frame-based navigation, have a look at the
frames.mrc example provided in the documentation (in an appendix section).

Personally, frames have the major drawback of not being friendly
to non-graphical browsers and bookmarking a particular message is
not easy.

Have you looked at the layout for the mhonarc.org list archives,
<http://www.mhonarc.org/archive/> as an alternative?
