couldn't one just skip the whole "what's a shell metacharacter these days?" issue, and just always go for door #3?
I dunno ... maybe it's just me, but it seems ... inelegant to always use door #3. Yeah, this isn't 20 years ago when processes were more expensive, but it just bugs me.
