I think the Unicode names are the right way to do this, however ugly they
may sound.
I know Japanese is the biggest nightmare to name characters because in
Japanese we give too many "names" to each character; It's really hard
to disambiguate these....
Let me know if you manage this; I know a bunch of PhD students who'd be
interested in your solution.
