This doesn't work here, because the mailhost is a separate machine,
called "kantti". [Etymological digression omitted B-]
If you don't get results anything like Gregory's, try asking the
mailhost to expand your mail address:

 % telnet kantti smtp
Trying 128.214.4.16...
Connected to kantti.helsinki.fi.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 kantti.helsinki.fi Sendmail 8.6.12+Emil1.1/8.6.5 ready at Wed, 3 Apr 1996 1\
 expn reriksso
250 Era Eriksson <"|IFS=' ';exec /usr/local/bin/procmail # reriksso"@kantti.hel\
 quit
221 kantti.helsinki.fi closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.

(Slightly trimmed && edited; the ones with a space in front are my input.)

Easier still would be to send yourself a mail message and have a
.forward which does something easily detectable, such as stuff the
message directly in a file. Just remember to put back your "real"
.forward when you're done testing :-)

Hope this helps,
