Now who's it REALLY from according to the "Rules"?

Well, let's take a look at your post to the list (without the "| "
quotes):

| From procmail-request(_at_)Informatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE Mon Oct 7
13:43:42 1996
| From: "Michael C. Tiernan" <mtiernan(_at_)bbn(_dot_)com>
| Subject: Clarification of a delemma.
| To: procmail(_at_)Informatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE (The ProcMail mailing
list)
| Date: Mon, 7 Oct 1996 11:38:23 -0400 (EDT)

(BTW, I deleted a bunch of other headers; did you?)

OK, what's your definition of "REALLY from?" It REALLY came from
the mailing list, and you REALLY wrote it (I think).

Who does procmail SAY/THINK it is from?

Procmail doesn't say or think anything; it merely parses the headers;
you can use it to evaluate either one.

RFC 822 doesn't say anything about "From "; I think that comes
from SMTP information only. It's harder to forge (but not impossible).
From memory, RFC 822 allows changing "From:" in which case either
"Sender:" or "Resent-Sender:" should be supplied.

Anoother example in the RFC is a secretary who writes and sends mail
for her boss, but replies should go to the boss. She sets From:
to be her boss's address, and Sender: to her own.

In the event that the two questions don't give the same answer,
is ther anything that can be done to make the two agree?

Why do you want to make them agree? They mean different things.
I can use procmail to sort on either the collective wisdom of this
list, or the wisdom eminating from your keyboard alone, as I wish.

Cheers,
