Does making $LOCKFILE null have the same effect as clearing it? Usual
procedure is to unset it (just
LOCKFILE
without an equal sign nor anything else).

If it's the last part of the regular expression, (\>.*)?$ is just a
long way of saying \> (remember that \< and \> can match newlines).
