I'm probably way off on this (don't use pop anything, so have no idea how
it would react); but what about?:

rm /var/spool/mail/username
touch /usr/home/username/inbox
ln -s /usr/home/username/inbox /var/spool/mail/username

Of course, there's going to be some problems with permissions; but that's
your problem (I.E. I have no idea what the exact fileperm problems are
going to be.:)).
