[ANN] SpamTrap (spam filter pkg) available

1997-10-08 09:00:01
Hi all,

SpamTrap is yet another spam filtering package based on
procmail, gnu grep, and a collection of idioms gleaned from
the folks on the procmail list. There is nothing startlingly
new here, just a convenient package that we are using and
that anyone else is welcome to.

SpamTrap contains one shell script that installs or removes
a .spamtrap directory, a base procmailrc file, .forward file,
and a few additional files.

The procmailrc has keyword detection as well as a scoring
scheme that seems to do a pretty good job of flagging spam.
The user does not need to edit or understand the procmailrc
file at all (unless s/he wants to) and just tweaks the behavior
by adding to a "friends" file (known good addresses). A "headerMatch"
file and a "bodyMatch" file are also provided (pattern match in
either flags the mail as spam) but their use is discouraged
since the scoring does rather well.

Suspect spam is saved in a "junkmail" file (nothing is deleted).
Users can either periodically retrieve their collected spam
for review/deletion by sending themselves a message (which
causes the "junkmail" file to be forwarded) or via a cronjob
that does basically the same thing.

Use it as you will...
You can pick it up at ftp://boombox.micro.umn.edu/pub/spamtrap/
