Four control-A's on a line by themselves mark the beginning and end of
each message in the MMDF mailbox format. If a message contains four
control-A's already then the first one is turned into a control-B.
At this point, the only commonly used set of programs that I know of
that use the MMDF mailbox format with any regularity is the MH suite of
programs. "packf", for instance, always writes out such a file.
Perhaps that suggests where you should start looking?
