EXITCODES, bounce, might be off topic

2002-04-19 15:10:15

As you have probably read on the subject line, this might be a bit of
topic.

Straight to the point:

I use a number of recipes to filter out spam, a great deal of them very
successfully. In all recipes I assign an EXITCODE such that an
appropriate error message/bounce is sent back (typically 67, no such
user ;)

However, these people tend to provide very crappy From: fields, always
forged, you know the drill. So, it's pretty obvious they will never read
my bounce but, I ask, will someone?!

What is the exact path the bounce follows? Does it look to the
Return-Path: field (often inexistent or as much crap as the From:)? Does
it try to follow the path it took to reach my server, contacting the
same servers for mail transfer?...

You will understand the problem, I have less and less time to find the
complain directly to the faulty relay. So, I am relying on the automatic
bounce messages. However, if they have no chance to ever be read by a
human, I might as well remove the EXITCODE's from my recipes, they would
only generate dummy traffic from my server...

I had a quick look in a number of RFC's and could not find the answer I
was looking for. Does any of you out there have the answer at hand?

Thanks in advance.
Rui Pires
