Yeah, the postmaster / system administrator of the machine where you are
receiving the spam.  He might not appreciate it ...

Return-Path: field (often inexistent or as much crap as the From:)?

Effectively, yes.  The bounce tries to go back to the sender as reported
to your MTA in the SMTP conversation, which normally is the same as the
address in the Return-Path:.  In most cases, when that fails, a copy of
the bounced bounce is sent to the local postmaster.
