Why aren't the addresses in the archives masked?
Feel free to ask the operators of each of the archives. Keep in mind that
they are unassociated with the procmail group or the procmail listserv,
outside of having some account that is subscribed to the list. Several
individuals also maintain mail-to-web archives of certain list mail, and at
one point, there was someone posting procmail list messages to usenet
through a gateway. Have fun tracking it all down, or who is ultimatley
responsible for any given archive.
If you don't want to participate in the spam action group, you don't have to.
Let me point out again that this list is about PROCMAIL, not about spam
activism - there are plenty of usenet newsgroups for that, so feel free to
take your cause to one of them (one of the net-abuse newsgroups seems
rather appropriate).
I see no reason to exclude the issue from this list, as it is procmail list
related, because it is procmail list members who are being attacked.
It dilutes the purpose of this list.
The problem with using procmail to filter spam is that as soon as your
scripts are good enough to block all spam, it also blocks mail you don't want
blocked.
You should spend more time reading the procmail list and less time fretting
over spam activism - those who filter effectively eliminate virtually all
of their spam, lose NO important email, and sacrifice a minimum of
potentially legitimate email to spam filtering (but still not generally
important email since that would be whitelisted).
I share your aggravation at receiving spam, but this list simply IS NOT a
spam activism forum.
And even if did that correctly, routing the spam to /dev/nul does
not provide an incentive for the spammer to stop.
That's your own personal problem to take up with the spammer. If you
wanted to go down in history as the first person to go murder a spammer, I
doubt you'd find many people here to oppose your decision, and that would
certainly send a chill down the spine of many spammers worldwide - perhaps
enough to make them think twice before embarking on a new spam
campaign. That's not a suggestion of course, but a generalized observation.
I'm rather bitter on the whole procmail approach because I wasn't able to get
the damn .forward file to work.
Your complaint about spam you received (not even THROUGH this list, but at
an address you state you only use for this list) is the first I've heard of
you, Mr. Fuq, outside of a post a couple of weeks ago which demonstrated
that you were pulling the content of your .forward file from some
undiscovered orofice instead of using one of the several provided formats
(including those found in the procmail documentation and several
FAQs). I'm sincerely sorry that you had a problem with successfully
setting up procmail on your system, but seeing as the membership of this
list isn't responsible for the toner spam you received, I still fail to see
how your current SINGULAR spam problem is cause to turn the procmail list
into your activism forum. This forum is about PROCMAIL and it's use.
The archives and the listers here were unable to resolve my problem, so
I'm pretty much forced to take the lawsuit approach.
I'd start with the manpage. In any event, if you want to sue some spammer,
that's between YOU and the SPAMMER. Please leave this forum out of it.
If I ever do get procmail working, I'm not going to have spam simply sent to
/dev/nul.
Please direct your attentions on this forum to the procmail solution and
not the legal one. If you haven't noticed, the listserv itself is hosted
in Germany, and many of it's members are not US citizens, and thus would
have a difficult time participating in your suggested class-action lawsuit
against a a spammer.
