I was thinking that because it was a special character you didn't need to
escape it...
If you look at the original, the last > is not escaped either, but it is
caught. And it isn't enclosed \>.

* $ B ?? <\!--$LOGNAME-->
! devnull(_at_)petersonsales(_dot_)net
I thought if you were using
"\< word\>" type construction, you were searching for Word boundaries and
exact strings->\
So why wouldn't it be written:
* $ B ?? \<<!--$LOGNAME-->\>
