The other alternative is to tell the person that you're willing to discuss it
only on-list. I was in almost that very position a couple weeks ago, only to
discover that I'd made the reverse goof of the one I pulled this morning and
had sent my first answer privately when I meant it to be public; that was why
the asker sent his second message to me privately. I am old, decrepit, and
doddering.

I take caffeine only in milk chocolate or the occasional glass of iced tea,
but the sight of "Reply-To:" at the top of the text should perform the same
function of springing me to alertness.
