Assigning to LOG

Presumably assigning to LOG only works within .procmailrc right?

And so if I want to write something to my logfile from a filter I can 
just write to sterr right?
I just tried this and nothing made it to my logfile so how do I put 
something in $LOGFILE
from a filter?

My ISP is using procmail 3.22
