Without it I get:

It is to prevent the shell. See also:

My conclusion: that 'gzip >> file' command will not work without a shell.
AFAIK, both gzip and bzip2 don't have an 'append output to a named file'
option.
Idea: filter the message through gzip, then deliver (=append to mbox)
the compressed result. Would that work?
