[OT] Request for MTA suggestions

2005-03-18 14:34:29
[background]
OK, the Windows based MTA here gorfed like I've been telling the boss it
would for a couple of years now. Volume went up and it "got lost". I have
it working again but I've got about 50K messages that I'm trying to figure
out how to re-inject into the queue because it does funky things when mail
is received like splitting them up into individual parts as separate files
(headers/bodies/attachments) then recombining during final delivery.

[request]
So, now I need to build a complete new mail solution and I'm looking for
suggestions. I did this once before but the boss nixed the new server idea
because the old one "was working fine".

Requirements: (can be handled by mutiple programs of course)

Ability to handle 100,000+ inbound and 20,000+ outbound messages daily.
It's going on a P4-3.2 with 1G of RAM and RAID mirrored SATA drives so
hardware speed should be OK.

POP3

Webmail

USER ADJUSTABLE! Spam scanning. The current setup only allows domain wide
scanning and it's beating me to death trying to catch spam at the ISP level
without boinking legitimate mail. Even if it's just a "clickable" setting
in webmail that wuld allow them to choose "High, medium, low" based on
spamassassin scores that would be better than what we have.

Virus scanning -- we're not even doing that at this time because I told the
boss it would kill the machine to handle the extra processes.

Virtual domain handling using a db backend. I don't want a /etc/passwd
entry for every email account

Web administration so we don't have to keep ssh sessions open 24/7

{I'm sure I'm forgetting something else that I need -- feel free to add to
the list}

[closing]

This is *NOT* a request for "hey, how do I set all of this up". I'd just
like to know what some of you are using successfully.

Please respond off list unless others here are interested in what our
"procmail gurus" are using as their backend when they have the choice to
control their own MTA. If ANYONE, even a single person, expresses distaste
for the additional bandwidth and off topic nature of replies on this thread
then everyone please move it completely off list. If there are a few whould
like to have a discussion about this topic I can set up a temporary,
manually managed, list and add those who ask. I'll remove the list when
we've beaten the subject to death for a week or two.

Thanks all,

Gerald
