Please can you stop HIJACKING E-Mail-Threads?

Some people are apparently unable to compose a message to a list and key in

I've actually done this before and got railed about it. But is sounds
like email clients should default to clearing those extra thread headers
whenever a users modifies a subject line. Maybe a good suggestion for
Thunderbird...

Now that, would be truly annoying behavior. The purpose of threading is to
keep related messages together. A subject change does not indicate that a
message is not related to previous messages in the thread.

For example, there has recently been a thread about changing incoming
message date headers to match system arrival time. Two or three weeks from
now one of the list gurus may have an idea to add to that by posting a
"Other date functions in procmail" message with references to the original
date changing thread. If changing the subject caused the references headers
to vanish it would look like a new message and one would have to go digging
through archives to find the original message(s) it was referring to.

The solution is quite simple though. I don't recall any MUA that doesn't
have some sort of address book or alias feature for frequently used email
addresses. Just use it. If you want to post a new message that has nothing
to do with any previous message on the list use that address book to pick
out the list address and compose a new message.

Me, I'm lazy. It's amazing how much work it takes to be lazy though. My MUA
allows me to set preferences on each individual folder in which I have my
mail sorted. When I'm reading the procmail list folder if I click the
"compose" button it automatically inserts the list address in the "To:"
header and the address I use for procmail list email in the "From:" header.

And my MTA uses SMTP Auth to match a username/password pair to set the
"Sender:" header to match the "From:" address.

It took a while to get it all set up because I'm subscribed to 10 or 12
lists and use a different email address for each. Plus other addresses for
family correspondence, various work related addresses, etc. About 20 - 25
different email addresses total.
