RE: Is it RFC yet?

2003-12-15 11:32:20

So, like, the other day Greg Connor mumbled:
I'm not quite familiar with how something becomes RFC, but
someone here
probably knows. How long does it take for an internet
draft to become an
RFC? What is the ETA for the SPF draft to get an RFC number?

Highly variable. A lot depends on things like completeness,
willingness
to be accepted, who the Big Wigs involved are (Again, Hi ESR! :-), the
motivation and support behind the effort, moon-phase, and
other factors.

SPF stands almost no chance of becomming a standards track RFC in its
current form given the current situation at the IETF. People like Eric
Raymond and myself who have actually built systems that are widely used have
negligible influence there. The process is slow cumbersome and pointless.

The point of a standards process is to get buy-in for a proposal amongst the
stakeholders who can drive deployment. IETF has negligible influence on any
of the parties whose buy in will drive deployment of SPF.

If you want to go that route you would first have to convert from using TXT
records to using kosher DNS RRs. The catch (besides the obvious drawbacks)
is that they will not let you know the numbers they will issue until the
spec is a standard. The process typically takes from five to ten years (and
no I do not exagerate here). Witholding the RRs is the way control is
exercised.

I strongly advise that the group either ignore the IETF - the approach we
took with the Web until it was popular enough for us to ignore clueless IESG
demands such as merging with Gopher, or alternatively take the work to
another standards group.

The only real reason you need the standards group is to drive adoption and
to allow companies to discuss technology in an IP-safe environment.

This will take months, no doubt. Then, after several months it
will be implemente, followed by months of trial period, and finally
followed by months of widespread adoption. Overall, I'd
quess two years.
But I might be optimistic. :-)

I think we can take some shortcuts.
