So, like, the other day Greg Connor mumbled:
I'm not quite familiar with how something becomes RFC, but someone here
probably knows. How long does it take for an internet draft to become an
RFC? What is the ETA for the SPF draft to get an RFC number?
Highly variable. A lot depends on things like completeness, willingness
to be accepted, who the Big Wigs involved are (Again, Hi ESR! :-), the
motivation and support behind the effort, moon-phase, and other factors.
If you notice, there is an expiration date on the draft of January 2004.
That's right under the draft-mengwong-spf-02.9.3.txt on line 2 of the
draft-mengwong-spf-02.9.4.txt link. I know, that's weird. :-)
Is there a chance it will not?
Yes, but we (TINW) will prevail. :-)
Also, when might the SPF RR type become officially part of DNS?
This will take months, no doubt. Then, after several months it
will be implemente, followed by months of trial period, and finally
followed by months of widespread adoption. Overall, I'd quess two years.
But I might be optimistic. :-)
Will we have to patch the DNS server or can the rr code number be
added to a config file?
I believe it will require direct mods to several DNS implementations.
I've browsed the spf site and these don't seem to be answered. (Apologies
if that's a frequently-answered question...)
<Darth Vader Voice> Apology .... accepted. </Darth Vader Voice>
Thanks
