Bear in mind that one of the uses of exists and short-TTL responses may
be to authorize hosts on dynamic IP's, and you may be wrong in assuming
that implementations using SPF can perform the checks after the delivery
has taken place...
But it can still be done on another machine. Using ident lookups means that
you have to do the check on the machine with the SMTP TCP connection still
open.
Of course the main advantage of SF is the ability to reject during the SMTP
dialogue, but in a larger setup it is nice if you can distribute different
functions to different servers (MX, virus scanner, spam analyzer, SPF)
which using ident in SPF would hinder (only a little bit, but it is a
matter of principle).
