It isn't a violation of the protocol, it's a local policy issue.

I note that by default Exim rejects local parts that start with a | or a /
on the grounds that anyone using such an address is liable to be playing
silly buggers with pipe or file transports. The details of this policy
have varied slightly from release to release.
