Unfortunately next week this might not be true. Brussels is planning a
very  controversial software patent law and it seems that nobody can
stop them even though there are lot of demonstrations/action groups
against it.

Surely this isn't an issue for RSA and other public-key encryption
schemes, though. RSA has been out there for 25 years. There must be some
form of "prior art" criteria in the proposed European patent laws. If
not, well... I'm patenting the quick-sort algorithm right away!
