This one never existed, that is per RFC, the ftp variant does exist.

rfc 2396 updates 1738.  I'm not sure if that means the "is not allowed"
is thereby canceled.  The form most certainly existed, for proof see
your own reference to microsoft; also see current firefox. Existed and
allowed are two completely different things.

You left out:

which still stands.
