Other large ISPs appear able to overcome the challenges that
Earthlink's technical people seemingly could not. If Earthlink had
issues, perhaps they should have aired them here or minimally they
should have communicated their concerns privately with the SPF board
who could have then created a sanitized version of their issues for
public discussion on the list. Very disappointing.
It is even conceivable that Earthlink's sudden decision to drop SPF
may actually help competing ISPs gain market share from them (e.g.,
employing ad campaigns like "When it comes to identity theft matters,
is your ISP part of the problem or part of the solution?" or "If your
ISP won't even do basic email identity theft prevention, what other
important identity theft issues are they ignoring?").
The possible negative fallout from Earthlink's decision to pull away
from SPF is something I think that is worthy to watch closely.
