Re: [spf-discuss] Updated SPF validator and a new checker

Hi Herb,

No problem, actually that is exactly what I was looking for :)

The checker seems ok -- but the validator is not
very useful since it only takes a single line record.

Most records of a single line are pretty trivial to
validate.

I agree. The previous version of the syntax validator
(http://www.vamsoft.com/orf/spfvalidator.asp) took a full record as
parameter, I was thinking of to simplify it.

Also it complains if the quotes are left on the record
(even though some Nslookup programs show them this way)
so trying to check a records with mere cut and paste (
and no editing) is defeated.

I have concerns about this. Some publishers have syntax problems with
their policy because they add quotes to the TXT record itself (see
amazon.com a few days ago). Maybe this would work if the validator
could query a domain policy itself.

Then it complains about no "all" or "redirect" even
though the it only accepts the record one line at
a time (only the last is going to have a terminating
"all" etc.)

Well, it is intended to evaluate a single policy string at one time.
Multi-line records should be concatenated for validation. This would
make sense if it was evaluating complete records, indeed.

Suggestion: Accept multi-line records for validation.

We will consider this, thank you.

BTW, I tried tricking it by entering:

       v=spf1 redirect=learnquick.com

...and it reported valid but I doubt that it checked
the "redirect" to determine if the underlying record(s)
were also valid.

Absolutely, this is just a simple policy string checker. It does not
even complain if the redirect argument is not an FQDN, because it may
contain macros that extend to an FQDN. Sure, this could be checked
technically.
