RE: [spf-discuss] Can this really be true?

Jeremy,

If the customer is connecting to an ISP that uses Imail to provide e-mail
services, then they cannot accomplish SSL on port 587. Imail only allows
for FORCED AUTH on port 587.

(IMHO FORCED AUTH should be the STANDARD, whether they are using port 25 of
port 587, but that's a whole other debate.)

The use of port 587 will still accomplish forced authorization and bypass
any restrictions that may be imposed on port 25 by providers. This has been
effective with every customer we have that is using Outlook 97 and forward.
If they are on any version of Outlook prior to Outlook 97, then the problem
is not the requirement for forced authorization, but is with the fact that
they need to upgrade their technology.

Remember, accomplishing SSL between the client and the provider really does
nothing because all e-mail is sent as PLAIN TEXT between providers anyway
and there is NO security in e-mail while it is in transport. Never has
been.

Outlook Express does allow the configuration of SMTP logon by SASL on

I suspect, in this context, you mean SSL not SASL.
