XSL-FO provides an "absolute-position" property that should suffice.
I wouldn't try this going through HTML: it's bound to make you miserable.
So, yeah, sure: write an XSLT transform that creates XSL-FO, then invoke an
XSL formatter on your data using your stylesheet, and voila!
(Sorry, but your question was also kind of general. :-)
