Thank you. I did not try it from the command line, I was using XMLSpy.
Once I ran it from the command line it worked correctly. Thanks to
Joris for the original solution.

did you somewhoe run the input through an xml parser twice (which would
cause your escaped newlines to get unescaped, and produce the output you
state)
