RE: Separating XSLT 1 and 2 help?

You would know that if you keep up with the specs or subscribe to some
weblog... you don't need a list for that, do you?

I concur with Dr. Kay. I think we are in a useful state of transition
with regard to versions. Naturally, as XSL2 becomes more prevalent, we
see more and more questions about it (either directly or indirectly,
as people point out how to solve XSL1 problems with XSL2). Eventually,
we'll see only questions that apply to XSL2. Someday, we'll have the
same issue with versions 2 and 3, I suppose.

This process of transitioning from one version to another by providing
both XSL1 and XSL2 answers to questions helps the members of the
community come to grips with the changes between versions. Certainly,
I have learned a lot about what I can do with XSL2 because Dr. Kay and
others have taken the time in many posts to show both the XSL1 answer and
the XSL2 answer.
Since I've been using an XSL2 processor (Saxon 8) since July, the
"jumping" between versions in the answers on the list has been quite
helpful. I have implemented many XSL2 features after seeing them
demonstrated here.

As for this whole business of creating more forums for the community,
I feel that it would be a mistake. This mailing list is adequate to
the task of providing a way for the XSLT community to come together.
Additional forums (wikis, message boards, other mailing lists, and so
on) would just fragment the attention of the community. Also, when
people (new to the list or not) need to search for an old answer, it's
much better to have one list to archive than a bunch of them scattered
all over. I think we are better served by having one virtual meeting
place, and this list is it.

RE: [xsl] Separating XSLT 1 and 2 help?

Lately I've been thinking (more and more) that it would IMO be a
good idea to separate XSLT 1 and XSLT 2 help on this list host,
something like adding a second list
xslt2-list(_at_)lists(_dot_)mulberrytech(_dot_)com, where specific XSLT 2
questions
could be asked.

I don't agree. Many people don't know which version they are using, or
will choose which version to use based on the answer to the question.

PD: I also have plans to start a specific XQuery help list,

There's a perfectly adequate list at xquery.com. It's not busy, but I
don't think that starting a competitor will do the community any good.
