Hi Stephen,
  I feel, the below statement needs to be corrected as
well..

                    <xsl:with-param name="node-set"
select="key('by-date', @date)[position() &gt;=
$pos][position() &lt;= ($pos + 3)]" />

to..
<xsl:with-param name="node-set" select="key('by-date',
@date)[position() &gt;=
$pos][position() &lt;= ($pos + 2)]" />

I have not done extensive testing.. So please pardon
me..

I am not sure if my stylesheet is quite helpful.. As
Mike and David said we need a two pass approach..

I have a feeling my stylesheet might be OK :)
