once you have changed your source to use elements
not attributes, change
the  stylesheet from 

    <xsl:value-of select="@dsc"/>

to

    <xsl:apply-templates select="@dsc"/>


Then any contained elements (such as xref) will get
processed by the
normal docbook templates.
