you should take a look at xcruciate, http://www.xcruciate.co.uk/ I can
see some synergy between these 2 projects.

Excellent, one supporter so far.  :)  I'm happy to help define this.

Having said all that, I also wonder whether XQuery isn't a better
starting-point for mashups... not because of differences in power
of the languages, but because of different focus of implementations.

FWIW: We chose XSL over XQuery mainly for the ability to do schema
validation.  We wanted third parties to add custom tags (similar to
extensions in XSL).  Vendors could then create schemas that would ensure the
templates only contained tags supported by that vendor.
