the problem I reported in the original message disappeared when,
following suggestion of a local LUG member, I changed this:
poll popmail.inwind.it with proto POP3
to this:
poll popmail.inwind.it with proto POP3 auth password
Every esplanation of why it all worked fine for months and then
required this change all of a sudden is still welcome of course.
