UTF-7 has, however, one important problem: it uses + as the escape
character. My active file has over 200 groups with a + in their name.
[... reinventing IMAP4's modified UTF-7 elided ...]
You might want to read the IMAP archives where the decision to use
modified UTF-7 for mailbox names was made and some of the feedback
there. The IMAP mUTF-7 goals are close enough to yours that you could
just adapt it and at least make one group (IMAP client/servers)
easier. But the IMAP community in general seems like it has been less
than thrilled about the mUTF-7 mailbox names.
Actually, it seems that mUTF-7 fails to address the unique encoding
requirement just as UTF-7 does.
Apart from that, it is certainly concievable that omething in this
direction could be done - there's a reason I called mine a strawman
proposal. I certainly didn't expect it to be final - it was meant to
demonstrate a possible way to solve the problem, nothing more.
