Well, you may need to start thinking about creating a "Save the Open
Relay Society" or something.
One of the DNSBLs that lists open relays is ordb.org and it keeps
stats on the number of open relays. It was created after orbz(?) was
shut down, and in the first six months, it went from zero to around
200,000 listed open relays. In the last 12 months, it has stayed
around 200,000 and is actually falling. This is despite having
hundreds or even thousands of new sites being listed every day.
Does any major MTA have a default of being an open relay any more?
Are there still new ways of tricking MTAs into relaying regularly
being found?
I suspect that the number of open relays has reached a peak and will
now gradually decline as people upgrade their software. (Yeah, this
will take years, but...)
