I'll respond again in the same thread, hopefully to focus the
discussion a bit more.
1) I'm opposed to ISP's filtering port 25 outbound. I think there are
better solutions to the spam problem from their dial-up systems.
2) I believe that anyone, anywhere, should be able to connect to a
consenting peer, and send any SMTP traffic they desire to that peer.
3) I also believe that any recipient MTA can impose any conditions it
desires on traffic it consents to accept.
The issue for me is that people talking about mobile users of SMTP
believe (1) and (2), but appear to disagree with (3). That is, there
is opposition to recipient MTA's imposing conditions for consent.
I want mobile users to be able to send email. I'm not proposing
that any behaviour I dislike be forbidden due to network policy. But
actions have consequences. The policy of the recipient MTA may be to
discard non-consentual traffic, and that policy MUST be explicitely
permitted.
I don't want to be forced to accept messages which appear to me to
be spam. I don't want to be labelled "non-compliant" for discarding
such messages, even if they come from mobile users. I do want to be
permitted to create local site policy.
For me, that's the crux of the matter. People who want to roam want
to do so under *their* terms, and want to have *me* accept those
terms. They also appear to be opposed to me offering conditions of my
own, before I consent to any traffic exchange.
