Re: [Asrg] A response to the critique of my anti-spam system

2004-12-13 17:11:18

Given that there is a 10% acceptance rate and that we still have our
users report about 15% to 20% of that as spam, we are looking at 80000
mails being processed per minute. Say that 25% of this is first contact
and you are looking at generating 40000 bounces per minute.

So a 10% acceptance rate and we will assume that 20% of that is spam. So if
all this spam is sent using an invalid sub-address then that means that 2% of
all email sent to your server will generate bounces. So if everyone used my
system then email volume would increase by 2%. A 2% increase in volume
wouldn't overwhelm anyones server, although I admit that if all of this
additional traffic were concentrated against a single small server then that
would cause problems.

When you quote absolute numbers then it does seem overwhelming, but the
relative numbers are quite acceptable.

I do appreciate your input and I will need to adjust the language I use in my
website to describe how only filtered messages will receive bounces, but the
gist of what I was describing will remain unchanged.

Thank you,

Michael Kaplan
