Then that's not the domain name system, so is
likely out of scope for anything DNS related.
Just because you and me do not like "alternate
roots" is not the same as a hardcore technical
argument based on say RFC 1034: Can "a" root
in any class of "a" DNS have an A-record ?
The SMTP RFCs are not limited to "the" DNS, it
is perfectly fine to roll a LAN with "a" DNS -
ideally after folks have read and understood
what 2821bis says about gateways.

with worrying about the fine print for DKIM.
