I'd take any bet that only a really small percentage of our
customers will
be able to add correct XYZ records to their domains even with
help from our tech support:
- what do you mean with IP address? www.example.com is mine I think
I'd like to think said customer needs a clue about who really owns domain
names. But aside from that, the ISP could demonstrate some actual customer
service and take care of this for them.[1] Ie: "Dear customer, please put
'mail.example.com' in your mail program and use these other settings[2] like
our documentation says." The ISP can handle everything else on the back
end.[3]
- I am using a lot of dialin providers and their mailservers, I don't
know the IP addesses/names these mailservers use to the outside.
Isn't this what AUTH, SUBMIT, Webmail, and so on are about? Maybe not AUTH
because some ISPs block or redirect SMTP to their own servers, but SUBMIT
(SMTP on a different port) addresses this, or if not SUBMIT, just SMTP AUTH
on port 587(?). This is also an ISP customer service problem.
[1] My understanding is Internet Provider Customer Service is in short
supply. This is a rant I'll leave for another forum.
[2] Port number and AUTH settings exist in modern mail programs, even modern
versions of old mail programs like Eudora. I can enable this functionality
on my domain and that of my clients' with only a few mouse clicks - no config
files.
[3] I can demonstrate using pan-am.ca if you wish.
