I believe it was intended by the original authors. In fact, I
think they didn't even imagine the possibility of different
return codes on different lines. But I don't know for sure;
we'd have to ask.
Asking the original author would be difficult for various
practical and theological reasons; getting an answer would be
more so.
But, as several people have pointed out, there is ample reason
to infer an assumption that all codes in a multiline reply will
be the same from the text.
