A while ago I asked a few of the DRUMS veterans off-list why it was that they
chose to record the client IP address in a parenthesized (and thus, comment)
part of a Received: field in RFC5321. The answers I got were of the
we-know-it's-weird, held-our-noses form, but alas I can't find the emails
anymore.
So if someone can spare a few cycles, can I get a refresher? In particular,
since the form of Received: is basically a set of <preposition> <data> pairs
(e.g., "from foo by bar with baz for user"), why not add a "via" or suchlike
and stick the IP information there?
Thanks,
-MSK
