So your basic claim is that those responsibilities are incompatible
with transparency?
I can't even imagine what a supporting argument for such an obviously
ridiculous claim might look like, so please -- surprise me with one.
Gee willikers -- ICANN lucked into what is obviously a gosh damn
important function. ICANN supposedly emerged out of a community of
hard-headed, socially responsible engineers. There is no room for
equivication here. There is no room for pity. Be a shining example,
for gosh sakes -- how hard can it be?
If you bend over backwards to achieve legitimacy, I'd bet and hope
that most of us will bend over backwards to support you.

Randy, evidently you have not been paying much attention. No about of
action from ICANN has been acceptable. No amount of
inaction. Ever. Everything has been used solely as grist for the
criticism mill.
As you call for ICANN to be in the top 1%, make sure you are comparing it
to the right sampling of organizations. Name some other organizations that
not only have global infrastructure responsibilities, but organizations
that have those responsibilities and are subject to such constant abuse and
politicization.
