I am sure you are right, but in the list below the bytes and
number-of-messages rankings are more or less identical. Since this is
in the context of overload of the list by a limited number of people,
the number of bytes real contribution is not relevant. People don't
read it anymore. All what counts is number of (slight) irritations
while reading mail and total bytes traffic (if we pay for it).
What you want to know, isn't ascertainable through some log analyzing
script. You have to read all the messages. And we do not do that
anymore.

Unless I'm mistaken you're calculating bytes for entire message but often
75% comes from another message being replied to and so you can't really
judge amount of input the actual poster added to the message. If you want
message bytes statistics, you could try to see what parts of that were
not from previous message and only calculate size based on that.
