Well, a start would be a "connectbyname()" API call that takes care
of name-to-address mapping and trying different addresses until one
works.
Something like WSAConnectByName?

WSAConnectByName function establishes a connection to a specified host and
port. This function is provided to allow a quick connection to a network
endpoint given a host name and port. This function supports both IPv4 and IPv6
addresses."
