True, but without the diversity, the solutions provided by IETF are less likely to serve the interests of the extremely diverse Internet community. (And that's what we're here for.)

burn on contentious issues (ratholing).
Perhaps, but what we commonly do in IETF now is artificially narrow the scope of discussions to generate the appearance of consensus without the reality. One result is that our protocols fail to meet the needs of a great many users. Another result is that the Internet architecture has gone to hell, and we're now spending a huge amount of effort building kludges to fix the problems associated with other kludges.... and the new kludges will almost certainly create more problems resulting in a need for more kludges later. (if you need an example, you need look no further than PCP and LSN)
