So, from where I site, the real problem is that mailboxes are cost
free, and the large providers have it uneconomical to run a mail
service that is accountable for abuse by its users, and yet are
"too large to block".

Setting up an an email service is typically easy, but running an reliable
email service is a much harder job. This is where many MTA admins or companies
on the road of implementing their own MTA / internet email service fail over
the time. Around 2-5 years ago there was an hype of having your own MTA /
internet mailer system even as the smallest company - leading to many "crap"
within the net, because of many different standard violations, bugs and
security holes in the setups, made it very difficult to fight against abusive
smtp usage.

Anyhow: These times seems to be a bit over now... ß)

There are professional operating MTA / Relay and/or mail providers which offer
email services on any level and for any expectations of user audiences -
including very effective anti spam tech and active anti abuse management.

Ii someeone is happy with some kind of "cost free" service at all, who usually
has to save bucks on some points or generate revenue over other vectors (i.e.
selling user profiles, sell ads, sell reputation of their users traffic
etc.pp.), this is OK, but this is his decision.

I know that there are companies relying on email and gelegated this to any
lowest entry service - but users who really do expect a really (!) cost free
high reliable / high volume, high quality email service are just out of
reality. This is like on any service on the market.

(just my two cents)

best regards,

Niels.
